DIY Engraved Crayon Place Card Feature2

At the Toy Fair this past February, everything in the Crayola booth caught my eye. It was like a crafter’s dream come true, but for kids!

Particularly, I could not get enough of the Crayola Crayon Carver toy, so when Crayola asked me to share my ideas for using the Crayon Carver with you all, I was thrilled! The most common thing to carve on crayons is probably your name, so I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool to make DIY Engraved Crayon Place Cards for Thanksgiving dinner!?”

I always love when kids have a craft or activity at the table for family dinners, because they get antsy waiting for food to be ready. A unique, personalized crayon at their place setting is just going to be so sweet! It’s exciting to see the colorful creations that take shape when kids have a few materials at hand!

About the Crayola Crayon Carver

Basically, the Crayola Crayon Carver is a tool and a toy that lets kids create ON the crayon itself – then create WITH the crayon in their drawings!

It comes with the full alphabet plus some fun symbols like a heart, star, musical note, etc.

Oh but wait, first, you get to use this super wrapper ripper tool to remove the crayon wrapper. That is my favorite feature and my three-year-old’s too!DIY Engraved Crayon Place Cards

Kids arrange nine Tracing Tiles to their liking, then engrave their message onto the crayon! Engraving is as simple as tracing the tiles while the motorized stylus does the work of engraving. They can even carve on one side of the crayon, then rotate it and carve on another section and another for all-the-way-around carving action!

As you use the motorized tool to carve, the shavings fall into a removable shavings box, so you can easily discard them at the end. Carve onto standard or jumbo sized crayons.

You can also order booster packs that give you numbers and additional symbols.

Retailing for $29.99, this toy requires 4 AA Batteries.

DIY Engraved Crayon Place Cards Tutorial with Printable Drawing Prompts for Thanksgiving

The boys and I have had fun trying out classic Crayola crayons and special metallic and glitter crayons using the Carver toy.

For our Thanksgiving DIY Engraved Crayon Place Cards, the kids selected a color that they felt best fit each person.  Then my five year old got to practice some spelling when it came to arranging the text on the Crayola Crayon Carver.

The Crayola Crayon Carver is rated for ages 8+, so my two boys did need supervision to play with this toy, but they managed well with my guidance. My three-year-old needed me to help him guide the carver stylus, but my fiver year old could use this toy pretty independently. Sometimes he needed help removing the Tracing Tiles, but he grasped the concept of the toy in seconds and adores carving on crayons now.

Along with the Engraved Crayon Place Cards at each place setting, I created a simple printable page with a drawing prompt, so everyone can try their new crayon out! Thanksgiving drawing prompts include: Draw a turkey, draw a corn cob, draw something you’re thankful for, and three more Thanksgiving themed prompts.
